Blog Tour: Underwater by Marisa Reichardt {Guest Post+Giveaway}

Underwater
by Marisa Reichardt
Publisher: Farrar, Straus, & Giroux
Release Date: January 12th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Psychology, Realistic Fiction, Mental Illness

Synopsis:

Morgan didn’t mean to do anything wrong that day. Actually, she meant to do something right. But her kind act inadvertently played a role in a deadly tragedy. In order to move on, Morgan must learn to forgive—first someone who did something that might be unforgivable, and then, herself.

But Morgan can’t move on. She can’t even move beyond the front door of the apartment she shares with her mother and little brother. Morgan feels like she’s underwater, unable to surface. Unable to see her friends. Unable to go to school.

When it seems Morgan can’t hold her breath any longer, a new boy moves in next door. Evan reminds her of the salty ocean air and the rush she used to get from swimming. He might be just what she needs to help her reconnect with the world outside.

Underwater is a powerful, hopeful debut novel about redemption, recovery, and finding the strength it takes to face your past and move on.

GUEST POST

What Does Water Symbolize in Underwater/Life in General

I come from a long line of water people: Swimmers who held college records, water polo players, and UDT Frogmen. I am truly myself when I am diving through a wave or slicing through the ocean.

Water is freedom.

It is life.

Swimming in the ocean is the closest thing I’ve ever had to a spiritual experience.

So it only seemed right that the thing I’ve so often used as an escape, the thing that is so much a part of me and my world, would be the thing a girl who didn’t leave her apartment would miss most of all. And that a boy with sun-drenched hair, who slides down waves on a surfboard, would be the perfect person to remind her of that.

So, Evan.

But, while water can be soothing, it can also be scary and pull you under. It can toss you and turn you and make you struggle for breath. It seemed the perfect symbol for Morgan’s emotions.

The water element of Underwater is many things.

It is inspiration.

It is fear.

It is before.

It is after.

It was the most natural thing for me to incorporate into my story.
